Faith in Action

On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy made landfall in southern New Jersey and brought with it major flooding, travel disruption, structural damage, and major power outages.

Immediately following Super Storm Sandy our church, in partnership with Osbornville Baptist Church, used the Family Life Center to distribute supplies to storm victims and hosted home cooked meals.  We distributed food and cleaning supplies and blankets from the American Red Cross.

Now, we are opening the Brick Presbyterian Church Volunteer Village.  The Presbyterian DisasterBanner.JPG Assistance gave us two portable showers which our Property Committee has assembled and made compliant to Township requirements.  Through Grants from the Ocean Co. Long-Term Recovery Group we have purchased cots which will be set up upstairs in our Christian Education wing with the help of the Boy Scouts from our church’s troop.  Our volunteer groups will be using the Family Life Center and kitchen to prepare and eat their meals.  We have a wonderful a Hospitality Committee who will prepare a welcome meal when the volunteers arrive, acquaint them with our church and surrounding area, and be on call in case they need help with anything while they’re here.

Volunteer groups are being coordinated through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. Their work assignments will be assigned via the Ocean Co. Long-Term Recovery Group.

The Sunday after Hurricane Sandy hit our shores, Pastor Doug talked about the angels we had all seen in the aftermath of the storm – the power companies from all over the country, the tree trimmers, the neighbors and friends who were there to help and the people that came to help or sent supplies.  We think of the volunteers that will be staying at our Volunteer Village as our next round of God sent angels coming to help us restore the Jersey Shore after Hurricane Sandy.

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers:
for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.
